I’ve always favored the seeking out of rich experience, above all other life pursuits.
The impulse to uncover and revisit some of those internalized moments, stimulates the impulse to begin a painting.
From there begins an improvised dance, of laying down a foundation, and building on it through a backwards and forwards movement. A background in theater and dance makes me particularly sensitive to rhythm, drama and form.
I create drama by juxtaposing layer after layer of mood as it shifts. This translates into thin layers, opaque ones, scribbled pencil lines, bold strokes, soft ones, value changes, destroying the work, starting over.
A student of the work as it comes out the other side, I build on my changing sense of harmony and evolving visual vocabulary. Adding to and excavating backwards through previous lives inevitably pulls out my present experience of an internalized moment.
In each piece I’m stretching towards connecting to the simultaneous permanence and impermanence of time.
